How much installation costs depends on who does it. Online brands sell the equipment and expect you or your plumber to put it in. Dealer brands install their own systems and fold the work into the price they quote. Either way, the job itself is the same.
What an install involves
- Pick the spot. Near where the main line enters the house, with a drain and an outlet close by: usually a garage, basement or utility room.
- Cut into the main line. Shut off the water, then add a bypass valve so the softener can be taken offline without cutting water to the house.
- Run the drain line. The softener flushes salt water when it regenerates, so it needs a line to a floor drain, laundry standpipe or sump.
- Add salt and set it up. Fill the brine tank, plug in the control valve and enter your water hardness and household size.
- Run the first regeneration. Start one by hand, check every joint for leaks, then open the house to soft water.
If you’re adding a whole-house filter too, it goes on the same line just ahead of the softener.

A job takes longer, and costs more if you’re paying for the hours, when the main line is hard to reach, there’s no drain nearby or there’s no outlet for the control valve.
Doing it yourself
Most online brands design and sell their systems for homeowners to install, with posted instructions, videos and phone support. It’s a real plumbing job: you’ll shut off the water, cut into the main line and make watertight joints. If you’ve done that kind of work before, it’s an afternoon. If you haven’t, a plumber is cheaper than a leak.
Hiring a plumber
A plumber bills for labor and fittings at local rates. For a sense of scale, plumbers’ median wage nationally is $30.67 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics). That’s what plumbers earn, not what a plumbing company bills, which also covers its overhead and insurance. There’s no national price list, so two written quotes is the reliable way to know your number. Ask whether each quote includes:
- the bypass valve and fittings for your pipe type
- the drain line, and an air gap where it empties if your local code calls for one
- hauling away an old softener, if you have one
- any permit your city requires
Dealer installs
Culligan, Kinetico, RainSoft and EcoWater sell through local dealers, who test your water, quote an installed price and do the work. Their quotes include the installation, so compare one with an online price plus installation, not the online price alone. Our softener cost guide has both side by side.

Questions
How much does it cost to install a water softener?
Nothing beyond fittings if you do it yourself, which most online brands design for. A plumber charges local labor rates plus parts; get two written quotes. Dealer brands include installation in the price they quote.
Can I install a water softener myself?
Many homeowners do. SpringWell, US Water Systems, SoftPro and iSpring say their systems are made for do-it-yourself installs and offer phone support. It means shutting off the water, cutting into the main line and running a drain line, so if that’s new to you, a plumber is the safer choice.
How long does a softener install take?
Kind Water says 2 to 4 hours for its systems. Times run longer if the main line needs rerouting or there’s no drain nearby.
Do I need a permit to install a water softener?
Some cities require a plumbing permit for work on the main water line. Your city’s building department can tell you, and a licensed plumber will know.
