About The Water Monitor

The Water Monitor is an independent research publication about the water that comes out of American taps. It exists because the facts are public but scattered: results for PFAS (“forever chemicals”) sit in a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) file with two million rows, violations in another federal database, hardness in each utility’s annual report. Most people meet them for the first time in a salesperson’s water test.

We put them in one place, city by city, with the source and date next to every number, and explain what each one means for the softener or filter you might be thinking about buying.

Who publishes it

The Water Monitor is published by Will Bring, who also publishes The Window Monitor, a research site about replacement window costs. You can reach the publisher at will@thewatermonitor.com.

How we work

Our method page explains where every reading comes from. We don’t rate products or utilities, and no company pays for coverage. Some product links are affiliate links; our disclosure explains what that means and what it doesn’t change.

Found something wrong? Email help@thewatermonitor.com with a link to your utility’s report and we’ll check it.
